Cleartrip aims to become a top-of-mind choice for travellers when they are considering their next trip. Currently, Cleartrip relies heavily on paid channels to acquire customers, resulting in high customer acquisition costs.

This referral program aims to leverage referrals to attract customers to Cleartrip ensuring it effectively promotes the offerings to potential customers.

It was essential to understand our users' perspectives thoroughly. What were their expectations? What potential obstacles could they face?

Understanding how other companies are running referral programs

Armed with insights from our users about their needs and pain points, we turned our attention to secondary research. We analysed the pros and cons of referral programs used by top Indian and international companies.

Testing and Iterating

We rapid tested the design with 5 users. We had given two simple tasks to the user -
☑️ Refer a friend to the app
☑️ Understand what reward you will get out of the referral program

We had finalised the third option to go ahead with considering the time constraints and the engineering bandwidth that would require on the other options. But testing the designs with users was a critical step in ensuring that our referral program is intuitive, engaging, and effective.

We had just given two simple tasks to the user - Refer a friend to the app and understand what reward you will get out of the referral system.

Cleartrip’s
Referral Program

To be eligible for the referral program, referrers must have a Cleartrip account that is at least 60 days old and must have their mobile number verified.

How does it work?

The Cleartrip referral program allows users to refer friends using a unique link valid for 5 days every month. These rewards are capped at 5 successful sign-ups.

Referrers earn ₹50 (1st & 2nd), ₹75 (3rd), ₹100 (4th) and ₹200 (5th) per referral. Referees also qualify for rewards but only if they sign-up to Cleartrip within the timer period.

For the first time on Cleartrip platform we used JSON files to showcase our animations.

GIFs or MP4s were being used previously which would increase load time of pages, plus clarity was not achieved on the animations.

We pushed boundaries with design and engineering to add states for each referral, setting up benchmarks for what could be done with animations.

The referral homepage

To ensure a seamless user experience, we employed progressive disclosure. Instead of showcasing all the information upfront when the user first engages with the referral program, we gradually reveal details.

Additionally, we placed an FAQ entry point at the homepage itself.

This prevents users to feel overwhelmed and allows them to absorb the information at a manageable pace.

Each time users return to the referral program screen, a clear status update is shown along with their total earnings and the remaining time to complete their referrals to earn rewards.

The illustration provides a visual cue, progressing through five distinct states corresponding to each of the five referrals.

This visual feedback keeps users informed and motivated, enhancing their experience and encouraging timely completion of their referrals.

Entry points

To maximise visibility and entice users to join the referral program, we strategically placed entry points across high-traffic areas of the Cleartrip platform.

For the initial launch, the referral program was prominently featured at the top of the homepage.

We integrated it into the "Account" section and highlighted it so that it would catch the user’s attention.

By tapping into a platform where users are already highly active and engaged, we aimed to maximise the visibility and effectiveness of our referral campaign.

Impact and Success metrics

The referral program's initial release demonstrated significant engagement and growth within just one week, surpassing several expected targets:

Looking back and Learnings

✳️ User Engagement and experience

Keeping the referral process simple was key — it built trust and encouraged users to participate without hesitation. JSON animations made feedback intuitive, and strategically placed entry points maximised visibility and ease of use.

✳️ Engineering and innovation

One of the biggest challenges we tackled was ensuring the program's integrity. Fraud detection wasn’t just a feature, it became the backbone of maintaining trust in the system. The rollback feature was another win, it gave us the flexibility to pause the program without frustrating users. 

✳️ Cross-functional collaboration

This project reinforced the value of teamwork. The referral program succeeded because we blended user-centric design, technical feasibility, and a commitment to continuously improving the experience. It wasn’t just about delivering a feature; it was about creating something that balanced user satisfaction with operational integrity.

The next steps

Looking ahead, we aim to enhance user engagement by gamifying the referral program further. We proposed adding a leaderboard feature to incentivise participation and foster a competitive spirit among users. By the end of the year, the top referrer will be rewarded with an all-expenses-paid 3-night, 4-day trip to Europe.

The leaderboard is seamlessly integrated into the flow, providing users with real time updates on their ranking and progress. This feature adds an exciting element to the referral program while also encouraging users to refer more friends, driving engagement even further!
